Since I last checked in, Road To Rio had a very successful run on RTÉ2, and is now being repeated.
An episode is being shown every night in the week leading up to the opening of the Olympics Games- beginning on Sunday 31st July at 855pm on RTÉ2 ... and at 730pm every day thereafter… except on Friday 5th August when it is on at 8pm. The schedulers aren’t making it easy to keep track of!!
The series wouldn’t have been possible, nor half as good, without the unstinting, inspired and selfless work of @darraghbambrick , my partner in crime for the past few years. He is now in Canada enjoying a well earned break- cheers buddy!
Best of luck to all our athletes who are competing in Rio- Michael Conlan, Fiona Doyle, Robert Heffernan, Matthew McGovern, Ryan Seaton, Paul Pollock, Natalya Coyle. At the same time we eagerly await the exploits of those who didn’t make this Games, but will make the next- Jack Woolley, Cian O’Connor and Sarah Lavin. Last but not least we are really looking forward to sinking some cold ones with the now retired World Champion Martyn Irvine. It has been a privilege and great fun to film with these exceptional athletes and the people around them. Thanks to all.
Since the last post Strike Films has started making Playing Straight, Stephen Byrne’s exploration of why there are no ‘out’ gay footballers in the major football leagues. So far the shoot has taken the team- @stephenbyrne , Matthew Kirrane and Mark Dolman- from London to LA, Brighton, Southampton and South Wales- and we still haven’t finished yet! It has been a pleasure to meet Gareth Thomas, Graeme Le Saux, Anwar Uddin and others as we explore this rather big blind spot in the world of football.
I can’t even talk about the project that has kept Strike Films the most busy for the past few months- but watch this space for news of an exciting new format, which has now been filmed and will hit air in the early autumn.
Until the next time enjoy the rest of the summer (and if you are in the Southern hemisphere- spring is nearly here!)
